A short story. By Zhang Tianyi. First published in Shanghai Literary Monthly, Vol. 2, No. 4, April 1934. It was first published in 1934 by Shanghai Liangyou Book Printing Company. The hero, Lao Bao, is a loyal servant of the Liu Mansion. He scrimped and saved, borrowed and begged for mercy, and did everything possible for his son Bao Guowei to study in foreign schools, hoping that Bao Guowei could be like a person. But Bao Guowei under the temptation of bourgeois playboy Guo Chun, but dyed a hooliganism. His conduct is bad, his soul is rotten, he bullied female students, and helped Guo Chun fight. Finally, Bao Guowei was expelled from the school, the old bag's ideal fell through, plus the creditor claimed debt, and finally fainted on the ground. The novel deeply reveals the vulgar "climbing up" psychology of the ordinary citizens, but the strokes go deep into the symptoms and contradictions of the semi-feudal and semi-colonial urban society. Old Bao is loyal and kind, and there is no lack of traditional morality of old-fashioned citizens. But also believe in the "learning and excellent official" of the ancient motto, expect his son to climb up. The figure is a relic of a bygone era. Under the influence of the decadent culture of the bourgeoisie, Bao Guowei has become an ordinary citizen of the style of a foreigner. He does not believe in the "learning and excellent official" of the ancient motto, only hope to please Guo Chun, flattery, climb to the ranks of Guo Chun. Although the two generations of ordinary citizens are trying to "climb up", but because of different cultural influences, they have formed obvious contradictions. The novel vividly illustrates that in the increasingly semi-feudal and semi-colonial cities, the old generation of ordinary citizens cannot climb up, and the new generation of ordinary citizens are more degenerate. The work is particularly good at analyzing the psychology of characters through typical details. It is sharp and ironic, and reflects the profile of The Times while pointing at the sick life, so it has become a famous piece in Zhang Tianyi's satirical novels.
