About Student Press Initiative

Student Press Initiative (SPI) is dedicated to helping schools create project-and inquiry-based curricula that foster a culture of literacy across disciplines. Since 2001, SPI has collaborated with more than 400 teachers and helped over 11,000 students capture their voices and share their stories. SPI projects connect students to audiences outside of the classroom with the understanding that in order to produce effective writing, one needs an authentic audience. SPI helps students “Go Public” with their writing, empowering them to reach audiences beyond the classroom walls. Through projects that culminate in print, digital, and performance, students produce high-quality work while developing critical literacy and verbal skills that last a lifetime.
