This superb historical memoir recounts segments of Abdul Rahman Pazhwak’s (1919 -1995) life journey during the turbulent decades of late twentieth century Afghanistan written in exile in Washington DC in late 1980s. Ambassador Pazhwak was a preeminent Afghan statesman, scholar, and diplomat who offers an independent, multifaceted, and influential perspective on events, issues, and leaders inside and outside of Afghanistan that shaped Afghanistan’s fate and has led to continuous conflict and tragedy for the Afghan people.
This memoir was originally written in Dari and got published in Afghanistan as a book by Pazhwak Foundation in 2014. Recently, it was translated into Pashto language to reach a much wider audience whose primary language is Pashto. Hopefully, this brief yet significant book informs and enriches Afghan and non-Afghan minds and scholarship in service of promoting education, universal human ideals and a better world.
Pazhwak's extensive written works, ideas, speeches, and analysis articulate Afghan dynamics, hopes, agonies and struggles of his lifetime with candor and insightfulness. Additionally, his brilliant literary writings in both Dari and Pashto poetry and prose offer a window into Afghanistan's ethos and mindset. Ambassador Pazhwak’s remarkable service at the United Nations in the 1960s also distinguishes him as a prominent international figure with significant contributions to the United Nations Charter, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, as well as the achievements of his tenure as the President of the General Assembly in 1967. The UN records testify to his extraordinary initiatives and objectivity regarding global challenges of his time.
Pazhwak Foundation Inc. is a private non-profit educational and cultural foundation dedicated to preserving, studying, and sharing the life, legacy, and writings of Ustad Pazhwak.
