They did not know their lawyer. So, Skip and Miranda met the lawyer’s friend Val, who was serving as a guest host at Antoine’s in New Orleans in 1976. They asked Val how would the lawyer handle Skip’s defense. Skip had been arrested for no good reason at Mardi Gras. Skip was a black Creole and an accountant. Miranda was a Jewish nurse from Philadelphia. Was Skip arrested because his skin color clashed with hers? What kind of man was this lawyer? Would he represent them willingly and well? After all, he was a white Southern lawyer. What could Val tell them about this unknown lawyer helping an interracial couple? Val started, “I am a friend of Roman Aime.” . . . . .
