Systems Opportunities and Requirements

It is commonly established that people facing a new problem, issue or opportunity, think immediately in terms of solution, without spending sufficient time on the problem space. The consequence is that the solution is generally not well adapted to its context of use, or does not satisfy the users’ expectations; at worst the solution is rejected, and this generates a loss of energy, money and motivation. This practical guideline contains what is necessary to know for characterizing a contextual situation, identifying issues, problems, or opportunities, initiating the engineering of a potential System of Interest (new or updated product, service, enterprise) that could answer them, and defining the applicable stakeholder requirements and corresponding system requirements.
