All of the poems in this book were written in rhyming Castilian Spanish. The English translations were written with rhyme, and most were written in iambic meter. The Spanish poems were written using one of the following structures: romance (octosílabos rimados en asonante), soneto, lira, redondilla, copla de pie quebrado (copla manriqueña), or another structure.
The Spanish-speaking poets in this book include the following: Jorge Manrique, Garcilaso de la Vega, Fray Luis de León, Baltasar del Alcázar, San Juan de la Cruz, Luis de Góngora, Lope de Vega Carpio, Juan de Arguijo, Francisco de Quevedo, Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, Rubén Darío, and Amado Nervo.
Here are some samples from the book:
Los vientos eran contrarios,
la luna estaba crecida,
los peces daban gemidos
por el mal tiempo que hacía,
The howling winds were all opposed.
The moon was full and bright.
The fish bemoaned the weather of
that fateful, stormy night.

Cuando contemplo el cielo
de innumerables luces adornado,
y miro hacia el suelo
de noche rodeado,
en sueño y en olvido sepultado,
When I behold the sky,
adorned with countless points of shining light,
and view the earth nearby,
surrounded by the night
and buried in forgetfulness and blight,

Muy cerca de mi ocaso, yo te bendigo, Vida,
porque nunca me diste ni esperanza fallida,
ni trabajos injustos, ni pena inmerecida;
I bless you, Life, as twilight quickly nears,
because you gave no hope that disappears,
nor work unjust, nor undeservéd tears.
