This story of jealously, treachery, betrayal, endurance, enlightenment, enrichment, revenge, forgiveness, and stealth has been the basis for numerous stories, movies, and tv shows. Taking a dying commander's wish as a direct order, Edmond is going to deliver a letter on his way to getting married. The letter is stolen and ends up in the hands of a man that does not want the contents to ever be discovered. After burning the letter, he sends Edmond to prison for life. In prison, Edmond meets a fellow prisoner called the Mad Monk because every one thinks the man is insane. Edmond listens to the man and becomes educated and wealthy.
