The Count of Monte Cristo

Originally published in the Journal des Débats in eighteen parts from August 28, 1844 to January 15, 1846. This story of jealously, treachery, betrayal, endurance, enlightenment, enrichment, revenge, forgiveness, and stealth has been the basis for numerous stories, movies, and tv shows. Taking a dying commander's wish as a direct order, Edmond is going to deliver a letter on his way to getting married. The letter is stolen and ends up in the hands of a man that does not want the contents to ever be discovered. After burning the letter, he sends Edmond to prison for life. In prison, Edmond meets a fellow prisoner called the Mad Monk because every one thinks the man is insane. Edmond listens to the man and becomes educated and wealthy.
