The True Grimoire, as the title is translated, itself claims to have been first published in 1517 by an author named Alibeck the Egyptian, though in reality scholars place the publication in either France or Italy in the 1800s to an anonymous author. To make matters even more intriguing, there is a note within the original printing at the British Library (shelfmark 8632.aa.5) that reads, “This book was stolen in July 1972 and subsequently recovered by the police.” Regardless of this grimoire’s pedigree, within these pages the hierarchy of spirits to be summoned can be found, their sigils and powers, along with instruction on the prayers and rituals required for their summoning. The original manuscript is written in a combination of French and Latin; here, both languages are translated to English by Anya W. Vossand.
