The Layman's Guide To Land Navigation

Land navigation is a rewarding adventure. But since it has been around for a very long time, there are already many great books on the subject. So why write another one? My book breaks the discussion of land navigation down into three components (Creating the map, understanding grid coordinates, and orienteering). In so doing, I believe this book offers three unique perspectives. 1) As the title of the book suggests, this is a layman’s guide on the subject. It is MY way (but not the only way) of answering one question – “What is the least amount of information I need to know in order to create my own land navigation adventure anywhere I want to?” Therefore, this is a practical, git-er-dun, hands-on instruction. My intent is for this to be cliff notes on land navigation rather than an encyclopedic coverage of the subject. As a result, I leave out all the history, academics, math, science, and theory behind it. We will use numbers, but they aren’t hard to understand once someone explains what you’re looking at. And since this book is a short read, you can get an overview of the subject to scratch that curiosity itch without investing a lot of time, if you prefer. 2) What I’ve found lacking in other books I’ve read on land navigation is that they all assume you already have access to a map of the area you want to explore. So, if you don’t, then you are restricted where you can practice. But what if I showed you step by step how I use a free website to create a map of whatever area you’re interested in, plot waypoints on it, and print it instantly? Part I of this book does just that. 3) Another benefit is that I’ve included nine land navigation adventure ideas I came up with in Part IV. Once you get comfortable with the basics, these advanced ideas can add a little more challenge to the hobby. So what are you waiting for? Let’s navigate through this subject together!
