Stories of Southern Georgian Bay BIPOC Women and their struggles to overcome racism, discrimination, and otherness felt within the area. Growing up in a small town is not easy, growing up as a BIPOC woman in a small town is even harder. We do not learn about ourselves, and we do not learn about each other’s hardships. We are often othered, made to feel less than and unable to truly be ourselves. Having experienced all these things while growing up and living in the Southern Georgian Bay area, I felt it was important to create a piece of literature for young BIPOC women to be able to read while still stuck in their small-town. This book is meant to reiterate, you are not alone, and we are here too. I believe it would have been beneficial to me, and to others, to know that I wasn’t alone and that others had shared my experiences, overcame them, and became successful women. The catalyst to write began with the Black and Indigenous Lives Matter march in Midland, Ontario in June of 2020. I was disheartened to see the amount of residents complaining about the march. I saw lots of comments that were devastating “We don’t need one, Midland is not even racist”, “All lives matter,” and “There are more important things.” This led to the creation We Are Here: Stories of Southern Georgian Bay BIPOC Women. A book in which three BIPOC women (including myself) have chosen to share their experiences from within the Midland/Penetanguishene community that were racist, micro aggressive, or demeaning and ultimately how their lives changed for the better in the end. The writers include: Cassidy Press Tatyana Drover Aliyah Beckles-Gaines We all greatly believe that education is a tool to change how we are treated as BIPOC peoples. This book will hopefully be a tool for those who are not BIPOC to see how even small actions greatly affect someone’s well-being, and for BIPOC to see their experiences reflected. - Aliyah B.
