SAMUEL IRWIN, 1830 -1894, enlisted in the Pennsylvania 67th Infantry Regiment during the Civil War on August 21, 1862 at the age of 32 years. He spent time as a prisoner of war and caught typhoid while in a southern prison.
Samuel was wounded twice in battles, first shot in the neck and if the mini ball had been an inch or two in a different direction, he would have been killed instantly. The second time during the Third Battle of Winchester, Virginia, he was shot in the right arm and almost lost his life in the process if the arm had not been removed. A picture of the bullet that caused the wound is included in this book.
THIRD BATTLE OF WINCHESTER, VIRGINIA - Because of its size, intensity, serious casualties among the general officers on both sides, and its result, many historians consider the battle the most important conflict of the Shenandoah Valley, Virginia.
This book contains the only known CIVIL WAR PICTURE of SAMUEL IRWIN.
