WHITE RHYTHM OF THE RED BLADE OR LETTER FROM THE PROVINCE YAMATO
(paperback 60#)
Drama in twelve pictures
There are four time periods intertwined in the play: some early spring in the twelfth century, the early autumn of 1828, a winter night of 1855, and a summer day of the same year. The legend that permeates the action of the play tells a story of doomed love and forced revenge. Spirits that came from earlier times have a fatal effect on the actions of characters living in a later century. The sad events of the legend indirectly influence the emergence of two cultural phenomena in the history of the secret feudal empire. Presumably, one of them serves as the beginning of the tradition for highly educated, talented and beautiful performers of the ritual dance, and the other gives the development of a unique kind of erotic poetry. The main character, as a ten-year-old boy, learns about the legend in his last conversation with his father at the asylum for the mentally ill. The circumstances of this meeting leave an indelible imprint on his future fate. All his life, obsessed with searching for historical evidence, he finally finds them and sends the result of his investigation to his father’s long-time friend and his former mentor, despite the fact that he involuntarily turned out to be the culprit of the tragic circumstances that led to their twenty-year separation. The parcel reaches the addressee only six months later, which entails an unexpected outcome.
