Set in 1950's England Ruth West is confined to a dilapidated cottage in order to care for her sick mother and younger siblings. Her life is a struggle and when she falls pregnant out of wedlock this adds to her burden. A much need holiday on a farm turns into a drama when a murder is committed. Ruth finally finds love and returns to a happier life in Woodman's Cottage.
