On 8th May 1903, French post-Impressionist painter Paul Gauguin died, having spent his final days with a witchdoctor on the remote Pacific island of Hiva Oa. Or did he? On 2nd January 2008, Antony J Stowers, an obscure British writer, travelled to Pont Aven in Brittany to research Gauguin and, at a photographic exhibition, the ghost of a restless French legend found temporary sanctuary in the imagination of a unknown Brit. This is their story.
