David, Israel's greatest king, receives more attention in the Old Testament than anyone else. He has been called a just king, a fearless warrior, an empire builder, a musician, a poet extraordinary, a boy shepherd, a loving but inadequate father, an outlaw, a saint and a sinner. He preferred deeds and action rather than philosophical reflection. David stumbles often throughout the eight stories comprising this book, but nonetheless God called him a man after his own heart.
