A famous professor is murdered in his house, where he had gathered a group of scholars to work on a project involving material culture--objects and artifacts that are part of our everyday lives. Inspector Solomon Hunter, who specializes in academic murder cases, is in charge of the investigation and learns a great deal about academic politics, rivalries, and hatreds as well as about material culture.
