Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson receive an unexpected visit from the young lawyer McFarlane, accused by the press of murdering one of his clients, the builder Jonas Oldacre, and even having reasons to commit this crime, since previously, the disappeared man had named him as heir of all his properties.
The inspector Lestrade has no doubts about McFarlane's guilt and the full weight of the evidence is overwhelming. Likewise, Lestrade, considering that he is going to win the case against Sherlock Holmes, hired by McFarlane to free him, insists on closing the investigation, accusing McFarlane of murder.
However, Sherlock Holmes perceives that the case isn´t clear, and argues several times with Lestrade, who makes various mistakes, corrected by the collaborative attitude of the great detective. In this regard, Sherlock Holmes concentrates on these aspects:
1. The police focused exclusively on the scene of the alleged murder, while Sherlock Holmes went to the home of McFarlane's parents, wher he lives, and discovered relevant information.
2. Despite the fact that the police have a motive for the murder, the lawyer cannot be so clumsy to kill his client, on the same night that they are drafting and signing the inheritance documents.
3. Although McFarlane's fingerprint appears at the supposed crime scene, it was forged from the documents that the lawyer McFarlane had prepared.
4. In the files of Jonas Oldacre, there are checks to another person, and it can be deduced that Jonas Oldacre prepared a cruel revenge against the McFarlane family, and later he was going to live with a false identity.
