Holmes and Watson are visited by Dr. Percy Trevelyan, who tells them his story. He was a brilliant student and is a leading neurological researcher, who has even published a relevant treatise on this subject and has received a major award. However, because he didn´t have enough financial resources to practice his profession, he accepted the offer of Mr. Blessington, who granted him a house and a doctor's office, in exchange for giving him preferential treatment and granting him 75% of the income from his consultations. Although they have worked well with this association.
One day, late in the afternoon, Dr. Trevelyan treated a Russian nobleman, who suffered from catalepsy, while his son waited outside. As the patient had a catalepsy attack, he went to the laboratory to look for a medicine, but when he returned to the office, he realized that both had left. Although they came back the next day, apologizing for this abrupt departure. Nonetheless, Mr. Blessington, who was taking a walk during those hours, claimed that someone entered his room, showing him the footprints of the intruder. Additionally, since several days ago, Mr. Blessington was very nervous and feared for his safety. So, Dr. Trevelyan, at the request of his employer, seeks the help of Sherlock Holmes.
