The Adventure of the Solitary Cyclist

Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson are visited by Miss Violet Smith, who is affected by the recent dead of her father, while she and her mother are living in poverty. Nonetheless, due to a notice, she contacted Mr. Carruthers and Mr. Woodley, supposed friends of her uncle, who came from South Africa, insisting that the uncle is worried about them. The first is a gentleman, while the second is a rude person. This was very strange, since Violet Smith and her family had not communicated with the uncle, since he went to South Africa twenty-five years ago. The widower Mr. Carruthers offered Violet Smith a job as music teacher for his ten-year-old daughter, promising to pay one hundred pounds sterling for a year, doubling the current rate. She accepted, but with the condition that she will visit her mother during weekends. On one occasion, Mr. Woodley stayed at the house for a week, proposed marriage to Violet Smith and tried to kiss her. Both men fought, and he was kicked out of that house. Moreover, after leaving the train station, she went cycling to Mr. Carruthers’ house, and when arriving and leaving, in those weekends, Violet Smith was followed by a strange cyclist. That´s why she asked help to Sherlock Holmes.
