Before reading the detective stories that complement the Holmesian canon, it is essential to analyze certain relevant aspects, which give notions about the answers to these questions: what is the origin of Sherlock Holmes? Was there any prototype or precursor to Sherlock Holmes? What was the problem that Sherlock Holmes caused to his author? What is the Holmesian canon? And what are the emblematic literary works excluded from the Holmesian canon?
Briefly, the famous detective Sherlock Holmes was inspired by a famous Scottish forensic surgeon of that era, Dr. Joseph Bell, and the fictional detectives, C. Auguste Dupin (Edgar Allan Poe) and Monsieur Lecoq (Émile Gaboriau). In the story Uncle Jeremy's Household, the characters John Thurston and Hugh Lawrence gave rise to Sherlock Holmes, Dr. Watson, and even Mycroft Holmes. Arthur Conan Doyle considered that he should end Sherlock Holmes to make room for other literary projects (The Final Problem), but he was defeated by the forces of the markets, and in the face of so many complaints from fans, he was forced to revive Sherlock Holmes (The Adventure of the Empty House). The Holmesian canon is made up of four novels and fifty-six short stories of Sherlock Holmes. And these are the literary works that did not enter the Holmesian canon: a) Uncle Jeremy's Household, b) The Story of the Man with the Watches, c) The Story of the Lost Special, d) The Field Bazaar, e) How Watson Learned the Trick, and f) The Crown Diamond: An Evening with Sherlock Holmes.
These are the stories presented:
● Uncle Jeremy's Household.
● The Story of the Man with the Watches.
● The Story of the Lost Special.
