Aging Helen Patagonia is evicted from her beachside L.A. apartment, setting in motion a cascading series of consequences and putting her son Edward — a would-be detective with his own unique form of cognitive impairment — onto a trail of clues that will unravel a 40 year-old mystery. Meanwhile, a burned-out real estate tycoon falls in love with his new hire — a half-blind woman of color with a big heart and mad I.T. skills — but his bigoted, homophobic middle manager might be falling for her too. It's a comic cocktail of mystery, romance, imaginary espionage, and toxic American macho, served up by multiple narrators of varying sobriety.
