One Family – Many Lives Hidden voices from the Second World War reveal true life experiences. England, November 1940: 20-year-old ‘Wally‘ Wolman received call up papers and enlisted in the Royal Air Force. Precisely three years later he was killed when his aircraft crashed. Seventy-six years passed before Wally’s wartime diaries were discovered hidden inside his deceased sister’s wardrobe, revealing his very private and personal journey through the war years of 1941 to 1943 – in England, the USA and Gibraltar. Poland, early in 1941: 1,000 miles away from his Cardington air force base, Wally’s cousin – 26-year-old Chaim Goluchowski – was captured by the Gestapo in the town of Kielce and taken to Hrubieszow Concentration Camp in South-Eastern Poland. After an opportunistic escape he returned home. Soon after seeing his father shot in the street by Nazis, he was taken to Skarzysko –Kamienna Camp. Chaim survived the Holocaust and emigrated to Canada in 1948. His secret memoir – providing a vivid portrayal of his life from 1915 to 1945 that tells how he survived this devastating period – was only discovered after he died in 1996. His story is adapted from this memoir. January 2021: The DNA test came with a health warning: ‘Some clients may find the test results disturbing’. Joel used the Ancestry.com DNA testing service to ‘explore his genealogy’ in December 2020. This bit of fun, intended to relieve the monotony of Covid-19, became a revelation when he discovered his father’s previously unknown older sister – Annette Irvine, she was living 10,000 miles away in New South Wales, Australia. These and other stories are told throughout the pages of THE UNTOLD.
