Lewis is a successful off-Broadway playwright until his ex-wife traps him into writing for the small-town newspaper she recently inherited. After writing stories filled with falsehoods and inuendo, ultimately boosting the struggling newspaper's cirulation, Lewis' plans to sink the paper are derailed after he meets Nelda, a junior high school teacher who is wrongfully fired for introducing her students to "The Diary of Anne Frank."
