Tank Aces of WWII: Dmitry Lavrinenko

Tank Aces of WWII is a new series from Britton Publishers that focuses on the combat careers of famous tank commanders. This release highlights Dmitry Fyodorovich Lavrinenko in 12 historically researched scenarios. Lavrinenko was born on 10 September 1914 in the Cossack village of Besstrashnaya, (now the Otadnensky District) in the province of Kuban Oblast. In 1941, he commanded a platoon of T-34/76 tanks. With numerous tanks and self-propelled guns eliminated in 1941 during Operation Barbarossa on the Eastern Front, he is the top Soviet tank ace of the war. He achieved such impressive results by taking advantage of the T-34's unique attributes. Lavrinenko cleverly utilized the tank's armor, mobility and fire power. In just 28 combat engagements, Lavrinenko tallied 52 enemy kills. No Allied tank commander surpassed him during the entire war. For his heroism, he was posthumously awarded the Order of Lenin on 22 December 1941. After the war Marshal Mikhail Katukov, along with other high-ranking generals, petitioned to award Lavrinenko Hero of the Soviet Union, yet he did not receive the highest award until 5 May 1990.
