Charles Bovill, after leaving Bedford School in the
1920s, studied radio communication in France,
worked for Marconi, was transferred to Air Ministry
during World War Two and helped with ground-to-air
radio communications for the TOP SECRET Special
Duties Squadrons at RAF Tempsford in Bedfordshire.
Introduced after the war as ‘Q’, the gadget
quartermaster in Ian Fleming’s James Bond books,
Charles was well-known for his electronic counter
surveillance technology.
