Sound and Symbol in Chinese

Bernhard Karlgren, 1889 - 1978) was a Swedish sinologist, philologist, and the founder of Swedish sinology as a scholarly discipline. His full name was Klas Bernhard Johannes Karlgren, and he adopted the Chinese name 高本漢 (Gāo Běnhàn). Sound and Symbol in Chinese has been described as one of the most widely read introductions to the Chinese language. It is written in a style that is easily understood by scholar and novice alike. This reprint is that of the first edition, published in 1923.
