They All Call it Halifax, but I Call it Home

ByBethany Holley

Riley Hatch is a normal fourteen-year-old girl growing up in Canada in the early twentieth century who loves her family, sneaks out of the house occasionally on Saturday nights for ballroom dancing and picture shows at the theater and visits haunted houses with her friends. Riley disregards society's guidelines for becoming a young lady and attempts to move past the limits society places on women during her time period. When Mont-Blanc collides with Imo on December 6, 1917, however, her whole world changes, and she learns to leave behind her adolescent temptation to pursue pleasure at the expense of the rules and begins to understand that even the smallest of gestures make a person a hero.
