
Williamsburg has been in constant social and economic transition since people began to settle here several hundred years ago, inhabited by different ethnic groups who fought each other at times for control. Farms were taken over by industry, which was wiped out by fire, rebuilt, and destroyed again, by urban blight. Today high-end mass developments have taken over the skyline. They spread beyond its borders redefining this part of northern Brooklyn.
