Srila Gurudeva glorified the life of his Gurudeva as the example of a perfect disciple. He said, “Who will be a disciple? He is not lazy. He can follow all the orders of Gurudeva. If Guru is saying, ‘Give your head,’ at once, without delay he will give his head. Because he knows, ‘My Guru is so powerful. He can do anything.’ He will wake in the morning before Gurudeva and he will sleep after Gurudeva sleeps. He is always in a serving mood, carrying out his orders. “What will be Gurudeva’s orders? Only to serve Krsna and the devotees. He will not order to serve himself. If Gurudeva is like that, ‘Serve me, serve me,’ then he is not Guru, never. He will only be happy if you are chanting and remembering more, if you are very humble to others, and are always chanting and remembering, doing all these things. These symptoms have been written in Bhakti-rasamrta-sindhu. Especially Sanatana Gosvami has written all these things in Hari-bhakti-vilasa about how we can accept a Guru and how a Guru accepts any disciple. “Nowadays we don’t worry for this. There is no exami­nation of Guru or disciple, nothing. At once, anyhow we accept so many disciples and they make so many problems. So those who are really Guru will examine and see if any disciple is qualified. But those who are not really Guru, they will not see all these qualities and at once they will initiate anyone. So who is really a disciple? Those who want to carry out the orders of Guru.”
