Coverage in the morning newspaper about the death of young Lionel Hampstead's confirm Polly's premonitions the previous night were correct. She and Hampstead decide to conduct an investigation of their own and visit the Hampstead's home. What they soon uncover is a corrupt police force who seem to be more interested in keeping the case buried with young Hampstead. But Polly and Handgraves might not be alone in their thoughts that there is more to this case than meets the eye. There are others who don't think it's quite as open and shut. But can anyone in this town really be trusted?
