In previous generations the people who live in the mountains of France were frequently isolated in winter due to heavy snow falls. These days, this snow, known as white gold attracts large numbers of people to the ski resorts of the Tarentaise, the largest ski domain in the world. The resorts have continuously expanded with lifts and hotels to meet the increasing demand. Twin disasters during a heavy snow fall that has paralysed the region during a transfer day have once again isolated not only the locals but a quarter of a million holiday makers. It is those resilient locals who provide the solution to enable the most injured to escape.
