Things I Remember: An Early History of Blowing Rock, North Carolina, by Dorothy Henkel Summerville
Added Commentary by C. H. Robertson, M.Ed.
Dorothy Henkel Summerville wrote this informative and humorous history of the early years of beautiful Blowing Rock, North Carolina. Her father, Columbus Vance Henkel was instrumental in building a turnpike from Lenoir to Blowing Rock, and he was a co-owner of Blowing Rock's Green Park Hotel (today's Green Park Inn). Her mother, Lila Dunavant Henkel, was the daughter of Samuel David Dunavant, an accomplished railroad builder of Western North Carolina and elsewhere in the South. Mrs. Summerville spent much of her life in Blowing Rock, and personally witnessed its growth from a small mountain village to the first-class resort we know today.
