Yorkshire is the largest County in Great Britain and all British soil types are represented as are all systems of farming. In the latter years of the 19th Century the Yorkshire College at Leeds established a Department of Agriculture to serve the County. From a slow start and with the support of the major land owners and the Yorkshire Agricultural Society, the appropriate courses became established. The whole history is detailed by Dr Johnson. Tim Johnson gained a double first in Agriculture and Agricultural Science at Cambridge University and then was appointed to a Lectureship in the Department of Agriculture at the University of Leeds. While teaching Animal Production Science and Animal Nutrition, he conducted research on dairy cow nutrition and management at the University Farms. Before retirement Tim was Head of the Department of Animal Physiology and Nutrition and since then he has been researching this book as well as continuing to take an active part in University life.
