Capt. Smith was born in Scotland. He received his black belt in Japan in a day when most non-Japanese were barred from the study the martial arts. After WWI he taught hand to hand combat to the U.S. Army. Although you can find evidence of his influence in the WWII Army close combat manual, that book does not do justice to his principles and techniques. This is the true source.
