The goal of our work together was to develop creative projects that engaged histories and theories of animal welfare and then transformed them into stories that could help expand the readers’ understandings of dogs. With a holistic approach that recognized that animals are part of larger (human) communities, we were able to articulate strategies for reducing the number of neglected, abused, and stray dogs. At the same time, all students involved were able to practice their writing, editing, project management, and illustration skills. The result is five original stories that are uplifting, heartbreaking, hilarious, and beautiful. This book, and the partnership from which it developed, tells a story of how we can both learn from and take care of one another.
