Dick Turpin gatecrashes a dinner party thrown by the Chief Constable of Scole, the guests of which include senior members of the local judiciary, as well as the Chief Officer of the Bow Street Runners. Dick Turpin and the members of his gang enjoy themselves immensely at the party, relieving the Chief Constable and his guests of substantial sums of money before leaving. Later in the novel, Dick Turpin spoils the plans of a dissolute libertine, Sir Grayson Brigstocke, to marry a young heiress, Lady Claribel Woodlake. Sir Grayson is already married to a country girl, but he has neglected to inform Lady Claribel of this.
