If she did, it has been lost – so Chloë has re-imagined it for her Eliza was born in India, followed by a life of social climbing in London, then a dazzling entrée into Paris, where posing as an heiress at a ball at Versailles, she bagged a Count (except he wasn’t a Count and she wasn’t an heiress).
