About Christian Paterson

Christian is a highly respected open source strategy and governance expert with extensive international experience. He is honoured to serve as elected Board President of OW2, a prominent European open source organisation founded in France. Before establishing his consulting firm, Open Up, Christian was head of the Open Source Governance at Orange, one of the world’s largest telcos. During his tenure, he transformed the office to be more outward-looking, championed the governance’s expert community, and revamped its compliance function. His visionary leadership spurred two OW2 initiatives: 1. The Open Source Accessibility Initiative, which united experts from Orange and beyond, including the French government’s interministerial IT service. 2. The Good Governance Initiative, a project that evolved from ideas about a training and best practices work group to become a highly respected handbook. During this time, Christian recognised that many companies would benefit from a deeper understanding of how to leverage open source holistically within their digital strategies. As a result, he decided to leave Orange and establish Open Up. His first book, “Open Source: A Capitalistic Value Engine,” is the culmination of two distinct motivations: firstly, helping to explain to family and friends why open source makes sense for companies, and secondly, consolidating a business perspective that extends beyond the typical ethical or cost-saving discussions often seen in conferences.
