We live in an intimate relationship with air and water. With every breath we exchange oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon dioxide molecules with the atmosphere around us, while water makes up more than half of our body weight and we cannot survive for more than a few days without it.
In A Breath of Air and Drops of Water, science educator Christina Hart explores the roles that air and water molecules play in the world around us. Drawing on her experience as a teacher, a researcher, and - importantly - as a student herself, she weaves a story about atoms, molecules, chemical bonding, and energy that is accessible and connected to familiar experiences.
Christina's explanations of fundamental science concepts are enhanced with many illustrations, and she suggests carefully selected videos to further support understanding. Experimental activities make use of items found in most household kitchens.
Research shows very clearly that simply reading science text does not lead to understanding: the reader must wrestle with the ideas if they want to hold onto them. To support this active engagement, most sections of the text include questions that give the reader an opportunity to deepen and extend their understanding.
A Breath of Air and Drops of Water invites adults with no science background, to engage seriously with science and be curious about the world around them.
