Don Camillo Christmas Play - Adapted Giovannino Guareschi Short Stories
This short play adapts several episodes from "The Little World of Don Camillo" and other works by Giovannino Guareschi, who invented these extraordinarily lovable characters, writing as it were from Gulag-incarceration during the Fascist-reign of Mussolini. Guareschi' was deemed "a threat to the State" in his occupation as a well-known cartoonist and journalist (for, it was he who invented the caricature of the "three-nostrilled ogre of Communism" - pictured at the bottom of my cover-page). The psychological setting for the action on all levels, in the "light" of "political-correctness" is entirely relevant for today (now that "Communism has assumed its multiplicity of forms", to paraphrase Gorbachev in 1984); and so after familiarizing ourselves with this sample of Guareschi's wit and charm, it may perhaps gentle our view towards "sociopolitical radicals" leading-up to future Christmases!
