Crawford County was created on October 18, 1820 by an act of the
Arkansas Territorial Legislature: being the third county created after
Territorial status was established. The area encompassed by the
original county was of a much greater extent than that expressed by
the current limits. At one time or another, it covered all or parts of
eleven counties in the present State of Arkansas, as well as lands
in nine counties in the current State of Oklahoma. It was referred to
early day judge, Jesse Turner, as "the Empire County".
This volume represents the first attempt at compiling an extensive
chronological history of Crawford County. and may well be the first
of its kind in the State of Arkansas.
