Fireflies in the dark: new british poetry

ByCorinne Fowler

The collection is divided into four sections. 'United we fall' explores Britain's confused political priorities, 'Together only' is about the paradox of intimacy and 'Mankind' pokes fun at various performances of masculinity. The final section, 'Fireflies in the dark' traces the contours of optimism. Corinne Fowler was born in Birmingham, England. She works as a postdoctoral researcher at Lancaster University. In 2001 she walked 1,000 miles from John O Groats to Lands End to raise awareness of the humanitarian impact of sanctions on Iraq. She has yet to write about the experience but is saddened by the subsequent carnage in Afghanistan and Iraq. Corinne is author of a new academic study called Chasing Tales: travel writing, journalism and the history of British ideas about Afghanistan (Rodopi: Amsterdam and New York, 2007) and a book of short stories called 'The flood and other stories' (Firefly Press, 2007).
