The Fruits of Their Labors

The Diary of Ednah Maria Lyman Wilbur, Riverside, California, 1897

ByCurtis Wilbur

Usually printed in 3 - 5 business days
In 1897, Ednah Maria Lyman Wilbur, wife of Dwight Locke Wilbur, decided to keep a diary of that year. A mother of six grown or almost grown children, including Curtis Dwight & Ray Lyman Wilbur, (both of whom went on to serve as Secretaries of Presidential Cabinets), the year was spent housekeeping in the Riverside family home, and in managing the orchard business while Dwight traveled in support of other business ventures and for health reasons. It was a busy year, but Ednah made time to write almost every day, and in many cases delved deeply into her own ancestry. Names, places, people, methods of travel, all described in almost mundane fashion. But what emerges is a profound picture of pioneer life in early California State history. Well worth the read.
