Discovering Jesus in the Holy Eucharist through the Saints
This journal is one of the divided sections of the longer journal "Discovering Jesus in the Holy Eucharist through the Bible, the Catechism, and the Saints."
All of the "divided journals" include the same opening: Why this Book was Written; The Structure of this Journal; How to Use It; Tantum Ergo from OurCatholicPrayers.com, Heart of Christ Meditation, and "Opening Eucharistic Meditations" from quotes from Christ is Passing By: Homilies written by St. Josemaría Escrivá and ending writings: About the Author - a Personal Note and Confession; and Prayers the Author Said While Writing.
The Saints journal includes quotes from saints about their love for the Eucharist, the Mass, Adoration, and the Blessed Mother. It is my hope that through the love of the saints, our love for the Eucharist will be nourished and strengthened. Saints’ quotes come from the earliest Church Fathers to Saints from the 21st century.
First are the reflections on what the Eucharist meant to the saints. Their love for Jesus in the Eucharist was so strong that many found it difficult to live without the Blessed Sacrament. May these reflections increase your love for the Body of Christ, both the Eucharist and the Mystical Body of Christ, as you’ve never experienced them before. In the prayer section, we will ask for the intercession of these saints.
We move with the saints from the Mass to private devotion to the Eucharist, commonly called Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. The consecrated Host is placed in a glass receptacle held within a brass, silver, or gold stand to be exposed for veneration. This stand, called a monstrance, is often elaborately decorated since it holds the Body of Christ. The word “monstrance” comes from the Latin word “monstrare,” which means “to show.”
Saints who had a devotion to the Eucharist also had a loving devotion to Christ’s mother, Mary. This section of the prayer journal shows how the Blessed Sacrament and the Blessed Mother go hand in hand. We need not worry that we’re giving too much attention to the Blessed Virgin Mary, for she always brings us to Christ. If we go to the Blessed Virgin often, she in turn brings us to Christ often. Our love for Mary could never surpass Jesus’ love for his mother. Wherever Jesus is, his mother is close by, whether when he was an infant in a manger or now as the Eucharistic Host in the tabernacle.
