In 1825, a brig named Betsey sailed from Wiscasset, Maine to cuba with a cargo load of lumber.
When it arrived in Cruz del Padre, near Cuba it was overtaken by pirates. Seven men were on the crew and during their apparent execution by the pirates two of the men escaped.
This is the first hand details by one of the men how he escaped and the torture he suffered. He swam nine mailes in the open ocean, was befriended by a Spanish magistrate, attacked by robbers, almost kidnapped again by pirates and eventually rescued by the magistrates family.
This is his story written by him as he returned to Maine to file a report on his capture and escape and the capture of the brig.
It is a must read for pirate lovers.
