This novella is a fast-paced thriller, written as a tragi-comical political satire with flat cardboard characters set in an alternate reality. In an unnamed metropolis, a special intervention squad is sent to an anonymous dictatorship by an unidentified international policing authority. The leader of the squad is Che Guevara, who, in this parallel universe, is the Secretary General of the UN. The other members of the squad are Martin Luther King Jr., who is the President of the US, Abraham Lincoln, who is a “farmer turned factory worker,” James Dean, who is a rocket scientist, and Frank Sinatra, who is a “crooner and a loafer.” Their mission is to annihilate the country’s leadership, namely the president, who is Uncle Sam, and Dr. Mabuse, his chief-ideologue, who is also the creator of Gamma 69, a dystopian supercomputer that virtually controls everything in the country, including people’s lives, according to an unnamed ideology in whose name the citizens display portraits of Groucho Marx everywhere in the country. Gamma 69 also stages contortionism shows, where everyone has to contort in conformity with the position required by the official ideology. In the metropolis, Che has to contact JFK, a former agent who has gone rogue. But Dr. Mabuse designates his niece, Lady Di, to supervise Che. The trouble starts when the two fall in love, and Che is made prisoner by Dr. Mabuse’s secret police… About the book, Harold Bloom wrote, “Funny and witty, Daniel Deleanu’s deftly controlled experimental novella is a page turner that immediately pulls you under.”
