Set in post World War II 1946 on Chicago's South Side, the novel follows Sandy, a girl in her late twenties, beginning when she 'accidentally' meets Jonathon, the image of a close friend who drowned four years previously. But Jonathon follows a sinister agenda of his own. He wants to meet Sandy's roommate, Maggie, and break up the long-standing romance between Maggie and Pete. Pete's stories of working for the Illinois Central railroad provide interesting interludes as the action evolves.
