"But the stars seemed the brightest when seen in your eye
Where the depths of the heavens are spanned in a sigh"
This collection, written largely in the tradition of a Keats or Poe, lies outside the current vogue in contemporary poetry. Guided by the philosophy that there is no such thing as contemporary poetry, only timeless poetry, each poem strives for a beauty and musicality which arrests the heart and moves the soul.
The choice of mortality over immortality, and the possibilities inherent in both, pervades the series. It is highlighted in the feature poem ‘The Chained Muse’ with the conflict between the Goddess Athena and Zeus. Having heard the beauty of ‘frail mortals’ singing, the goddess Athena is moved and therefore faced with either the choice of losing her immortality or submitting to the absolute will of Zeus as he attempts to outlaw the principle of beauty.
Rather than shy away, each poem seeks the beauty and power inherent in the ultimate paradox of our mortality.
