Christ The Rest Not Moses

The subject addressed in these pages strikes at the very heart of Christian doctrine and experience: the nature of true rest, the meaning of faith, and the foundation of our justification before a holy God. I do not write as a theorist, but as one whose life has been deeply marked by the transforming power of God’s grace, through conflict, conviction, and consolation. My earlier book, Converted on LSD Trip, told of my dramatic deliverance from darkness into light, from bondage into liberty. That journey produced in me a hunger for the truth of Scripture and a lifelong desire to contend earnestly for the faith once delivered unto the saints. This present work is written for fellow believers—especially those who love the doctrines of grace, who have known the regenerating work of the Holy Spirit, and who are seeking to walk in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free. It is intended for those who may have found themselves misunderstood, isolated, or troubled by the pressures of legalism regarding the observance of the Sabbath under the Mosaic covenant. Over twenty years ago, a Gospel Standard minister informed me that my understanding of Hebrews 4 rendered me ineligible for fellowship within their churches. That moment revealed to me the deep divisions that persist within Christendom and the urgent need for clarity, humility, and unwavering allegiance to the Gospel of Christ. I write, therefore, as a witness and a fellow pilgrim—serious in tone, unapologetic in conviction, but pastoral in spirit. It is not my aim to stir controversy for its own sake, but rather to call attention to the glorious reality of the believer’s rest in Christ. A rest not found in the observance of days, but in the finished work of the Son of God, who said: “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28). I prayerfully invite every reader to search the Scriptures, as did the noble Bereans of old (Acts 17:11), whether these things be so. For the issues herein are not matters of secondary interest, but of vital importance to the liberty, peace, and assurance that belong to all who are in Christ Jesus. David Clarke
