The Lawrence Confectionery Company was born on a kitchen table in Grimshaw Street, Preston, in the county of Lancashire. It was a difficult birth, and the smell of burnt sugar lingered for some days. But John Lawrence was a persistent man; he bought bigger copper pans and a whole sack-full of sugar. His enterprise prospered and he moved to larger premises, employed staff, and in a few years became quite rich enough to buy a Scottish sporting estate called “St Mordan of the Two Rivers”.
The year was 1913.
This is the story of the next eighty or ninety years of the Lawrence family and those who were their guests, friends and enemies. It is a story of joy and sorrow, of their heartfelt love of the mountains, glens and rivers of this wondrous place. It is also a tale of deep hurt and despair – and even bloody murder!
